KSQM Coffee & Cake: KIT Alumni Share Their Journey from Academia to Industry
Dr. Yi Yao and Dr. Sebastian Kuntz shared their professional journeys with current PhD students and researchers, offering valuable insights into career paths beyond academia.
Dr. Yi Yao, who studied Materials Science and conducted PhD research on light-matter interactions in quantum materials at IQMT, presented "From Quantum materials to laser physics: a journey from KIT to industrial photonics at TRUMPF." She discussed her transition to TRUMPF, where she now works as a System Engineer focusing on simulation and laser amplification processes.
Dr. Sebastian Kuntz shared his path "From Scientific Foundations to High-Tech Innovation," detailing his physics background and PhD research on frustrated quantum critical systems in heavy fermion compounds. He described his career transition to Physik Instrumente (PI), where he currently serves as Senior Research Engineer in Global Innovation.
The afternoon event included presentations from both speakers, followed by an interactive Q&A session where participants discussed career transitions, the differences between industry and academia, and received practical advice for their own career planning. The informal atmosphere, complete with coffee and cake, encouraged networking and small group discussions that extended into the evening. A special highlight was the arrival of Professor Matthieu Le Tacon, the former supervisor of both alumni, leading to a warm reunion and nice get-together.
